You Don't Need Much to Make Memories

You don't need an 80 acre sunflower field come dove season to have a great time with the family. Any old field will do if you put just a little effort into it. Most hunting clubs have green fields. With a little top sown wheat you could have a nice place to shoot a few doves. You might even be able to work out a deal with them. Rather than try to lease a place it may be that if you till and plant their field, you can hunt it for a week or two. One year I knew the field I usually hunt would not be ready. Next to the house I had some goats in a 3/4 acre pen. I decided to top sow wheat so the goats could have some winter forage. On opening day of dove season, I limited out. Any little spot of ground that you can prepare with top sown wheat in a legal manner and have safe shooting is a dove hunt waiting to happen. Grab a few kids and invite as many people as the field can support. It just doesn't take a large area. What you will need is a cooler full of drinks, a picnic lunch and enough snacks to last you until dark. Be safe and go make some memories.

A Real Life Hunting Party

I will admit it was a warm afteroon but when are you ever going to find a perfect day? The fact we had a free afternoon and a hunting permit in our pocket was the inspiration enough. The kids had never witnessed a squirrel dog in action and were anxious to see our dog B.B. do her thing. We were loaded with an array of weapons such as pellet guns, shot guns, and a twenty two rifle, along with various knives, hatchets, home-made spears and smooth stones the kids slipped in thier pockets. We were ready! As we walked the road, B.B. searched every tree for scent and scanned the woods for squirrels. She was doing her thing. The kids were doing theirs. Some insisted we must stop and build fortifications for the indians were sure to come up soon. Others decided we must pick flowers so when their mother came home she would be proud. Every can was a "what if that was a squirrel?.....Boom!" Heard a couple of good jokes and even stopped for a short pic-nic until a huge rock down in the woods got the kids attention. How did it get there? The aliens did it! No other reason for it. Needless to say in the midst of all this our little B.B. treed two squirrels up one tree and now they are ours. Returning with the squirrels, you might have guessed it. They became targets. Besides the initial take down shot there were about 700 more staged shots. You know, that's just fine. What a day, and we killed two squirrels to.
